Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In this age of technology, what if you could not complete the most basic work for school because you didn't have a computer at home? Many of my students consistently work hard and display the attitudes necessary to succeed in college. I want to reward these students with a tool they need: a laptop.

My students are 10th graders who want a chance to succeed!

Many are striving to be the first in their families to attend college. Many are English Language Learners who have come to the community from Spanish-speaking countries. Our school, which opened in 2004, is an urban public school that offers grades 6-12 in a low-income area of New York. Our school's mission is to provide the community with the best public school education possible.

My Project

Three hard-working students will receive Samsung Chromebooks so that they have the tools they need to become college and career ready. Our school uses Gmail, Google Docs and Google Sites for a number of academic functions - turning in work, posting class resources, and collaborating with peers. Unfortunately, many students aren't able to tap into all of these resources because they don't have enough access to technology. Over the course of the semester, I will be tracking students' weekly "work ethic" grades as well as their overall grade in class. Students will receive "raffle points" for keeping their grades above an 85% and maintaining high weekly work ethic grades. At the end of the semester, I will raffle off a Samsung Chromebook to each of my three classes. The more raffle points students have accumulated over the course of the semester, the better chance they have of winning!

I am excited about this project because it will give my students a meaningful incentive that will inspire and reward consistently strong work habits and performance.

Best of all, at the end of the semester, three students will have new laptops, which will allow them to have more access to technology, whether they are at school or at home.
