My Students

My students are young, energetic, curious, but also a bit nervous. Their sixth grade year went online early and many aren't back for classes this Fall. Many of them are already overwhelmed and tired when thinking about the Coronavirus and online learning for this year. Little do they realize that all of their peers are a bit self-conscious and they are entering a school with lots of quirky, funny, teachers who intend to make sure that they have a great middle school experience.

My students inhabit and live in New York City: one of the most exciting and busy places in the world, yet their school day doesn't always reflect that excitement.

My students are from all over the world and speak multiple languages. My students are curious and ask their teachers questions during class, before school, during advisory, and at lunch. They draw, play LEGOs, basketball, and video games after classes. They love music and movies. My students are special because they look out for one another and persist day after day.

My Project

These home hydroponic kits will allow each student to grow their own basil, kale, Swiss chard, calendula, and pole beans at home. This school year some students will be attending school fully at home, while others alternate on different days of the week, and all students and teachers are preparing to be fully remote like last Spring. These uncertainties have made using the hydroponic and aquaponic systems in school nearly impossible.

To adapt NY SunWorks has created home hydroponic kits to allow students to grow and study different plants all year.

This will allow students the opportunity to practice observation and data collection skills. Topics students and teachers can explore together with the Home

Hydroponic Kits include:

• Starting seeds in a hydroponic substrate

• Caring for plants as they grow by monitoring pH and adding nutrients on a regular basis

• Tracking plant growth and development by creating personal crop calendars

• Transplanting their seedlings into DIY hydroponic wick systems

• Plant life cycle

• Plant parts and function

Finally, as we prepare for this coming year these plant kits serve as a powerful metaphor. We are planting seeds which will grow over the coming months, despite the varied ways in which we may all be learning this year, each student will have their plants which they can nature and watch grow. Then when it reaches maturity, they can eat it and share it with their families.
