Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

At our school, a New York City public school in the Bronx, I teach AP Computer Science, an Arizona State University Cloud Computing Course and Intro to Programming to high school seniors. My students have responded really well to the curricula and we have increased our level of participation in these courses over the last 8 years.

I hope to give my students a space to leverage their own voices and experiences, and tell their stories through the creation of video games based in JavaScript!

I hope to have them consider gaming ecologies, societal impact and influences, and storytelling as a platform for their own creations and explorations.

This Nintendo Switch will help me provide access to a platform for students to analyze current and successful storytelling techniques and gameplay inputs and outputs. Being able to analyze and look for the use of key Computer Science programming concepts such as loops, functions, lists, objects and conditional statements in these Nintendo games will help inform our conversations and designs.

This Nintendo switch will be accessible to all of my students, including my ENL students and students with IEPs, giving them all an enhanced level of engagement in analyzing content choice, programming structures and scripts. By rotating group development projects through a research and development stage in my class, I believe that I will be more effective in engaging students and encouraging them to dissect and break down current games. They will then model their own top-down design strategies in the 2D and 3D games they will build across p5.js and A.frame.io. With inputs from a real wireless video game remote, students will be able to analyze and construct logic chains to manage button input, while analyzing game structures across platforms including Mac, PC and now a Nintendo System.
