My Students

My students are all special needs students in District 75, which means they have severe disabilities. They live in an urban area in Brooklyn New York. My students are all black and Latino and in grades 9-12. They live in poverty. All of my students have learning disabilities, as well as many have emotional disturbances.

They have difficulty focusing, staying on task, and following rules.

My students have difficulty learning through traditional classroom methods and with traditional learning tools. They are smart and capable but need to be highly motivated.

My Project

My students are filmmakers who create Podcasts, Vlogs and Music videos in my Media Arts classroom. They are highly motivated by the use of technology and media. I have found that they express themselves best through film-making and music, as many have great difficulty with literacy. They understand that they world they are entering is technology based.

We have an iMac computer for each student in the classroom but these computers are several years old and are beginning to show their age.

They cannot be upgraded to the latest operating system and they are not designed to handle 4k video.

I would like to have 1 state of the art computer in the classroom that will allow us to use editing programs like FCPX, DaVinchi Resolve and Adobe Premiere. I have the ability to teach the students to use the programs, but we don't have a computer in the classroom capable of running these programs.
