Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In continuation schools, many of our students and families feel disconnected and have been historically disenfranchised. What better time than the Lunar New Year to celebrate the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year and new beginnings? To help celebrate the lunar year and start building open lines of communication at our school, we will try to create a welcoming environment and involve our students and families. We need a coffee urn and table. This year we hope to host family nights including a Lunar New Year celebration for students to have the opportunity to showcase their work as well as incorporate real-life skills learned in the classroom.

The goal for this project is to be able to work with students to plan family events and incorporate time management, math lessons with budgets, planning for anticipated guest counts, etc.

In English class it can look like developing a script to get estimates for items or services or an introductory statement to open up the event, all activities will tie back to and allow students to implement concepts that have been learned in their classes. We are a predominantly Hispanic/Latino school community with more than 50% of our students coming from low-income households but what makes our students unique is their unwavering determination to finish their high school program by overcoming obstacles.

Help me give my students the opportunity to build the connection between home and family but also to take ownership of their activities and pride in their abilities and their school. The phone chargers will allow students to stay connected to family while working on school activities on campus. Many of my students do not have access to technology at home and often need to recharge devices and access technology at school.
