My Students

The students in my classroom are students with learning disabilities. My class serves students with a range of disabilities such as intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance and other specific learning disabilities.

Many of the students in my class read at kindergarten and first grade levels.

They struggle with basic phonics and number sense and are multi-sensory learners.

They also come from low income neighborhoods. As a special education teacher, I have to make learning visual for my students so that instructions in science, math, English and social studies more engaging.

I need resources that will help motivate, reinforce and improve students comprehension so that learning is meaningful to them, as well as build their confidence and self esteem as they make educational success.

My Project

The Powermylearning innovators program is designed to engage families in the learning activities of their children.

This easy to use program puts students in the teacher's seat at home, by driving content mastery and social and emotional learning skills.

Students learn skills at school and then teach family members these skills at home. This not only reinforces what they have learned in school, it also increases their self confidence.

Teachers also learn how to incorporate strategies for engaging families that integrate into instructional plans. As family engagement is critical to student success I am excited to see the impact that this Powermylearning project will have on my students and their families.
