While the pandemic was a global catastrophe, there were opportunities for learning and improving the way some things "had always been done." Before the pandemic, I had never thought about nor had in my room basic hygiene supplies for students or an air purifier.
After the pandemic, these supplies have become a part of the culture of care that I think is required in a classroom and also a necessity for clean air in an environment without windows.
This mini-grant requests supplies to refill the "Empowerment Cart," cleaning supplies, and an air purifier. As housing costs have skyrocketed, the number of unsheltered students has risen as well. Many families have trouble with basic needs. The supplies in the "Empowerment Cart" such as underarm deodorant, and pads are expensive and necessary for students to feel clean and not self-conscious.
We have all been teenagers and remember how painfully shy, awkward, and difficult it can be, all the more so when one doesn't feel clean. These supplies will support student learning by nurturing them and keeping their environment clean.
