This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I love my school and I love my students even more! They remind me a lot of myself when I was a student. Coming from a not-so-well-off family, my parents were not able to afford much, including basic school supplies. The majority of my students are from low-income families, but that doesn't stop them from learning! Working in a Title One school, I have seen firsthand how much these students are lacking.

It breaks my heart when I see students come back to school without any supplies to work with.

At the beginning of every year, I would pass out the supply list of really basic supplies like a binder, pencils, markers, etc. Some would be using the same composition book for all of their classes and some would borrow a pencil everyday (not to mention colored pencils, markers, loose-leaf, etc. that we would use on a regular basis).

Some students come to school hungry, freezing cold, with no warm jackets in the winter and/or without basic school supplies. This project includes some very basic supplies such as pencils, erasers, graph paper, mini whiteboards, markers, etc. My goal is to leave these supplies out at the back of the room and students can freely take what they need (instead of feeling embarrassed when asking for supplies).
