This will be my first year as an ESL/Regular education 5th grade teacher in Providence, RI. I have 14 years of experience as a special educator and always shared a classroom with a regular education teacher. My goal for this project is to provide individual desks to my incoming 5th-grade students. Currently, I only have tables that are very used and not very sturdy.
Having students use desks provides more personal storage than tables.
Desks are easy to use and will provide space for their books, folders, pencil boxes, etc. They will learn to keep their stuff organized and neat. I will be able to put desks in small groups so they will be able to work and collaborate. I will be able to group the students during whole/small group lessons or separate the desks during assessments. Using tables will not give the students enough space to work on assignments or give proper storage for materials.
I want to provide a safe and caring learning environment for my 26 students. Having the students use brand-new desks with storage will hopefully encourage them to work hard and keep their space neat and clean. The tables I have now are extremely old and unstable. They are also too short for my growing 5th graders to sit comfortably in while learning. Many of these students have never had the opportunity to have individual desks like I did growing up. I just want to be able to supply a great start to my first 5th-grade classroom!
