Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach GATE English and Western Civilization, a two-period humanities class that explores the relationship between history, geography, religion, arts, and literature in the pre-modern world. One of the most popular topics every year is how we can use history and cultural diversity to combat the systemic injustice and keep our community safe and supported.

My students care deeply about the world and want to make an impact in their own community.

This year, students are particularly eager to make new friends and help each other ease comfortably back into school after the difficulties of the pandemic. This self-starter, bright, and empathetic nature is what makes teaching GATE such a joy.

My Project

Earlier this month, I asked my freshmen GATE students to work in groups of 3-4 to propose a new room layout with upgrades of their choice. Students had to meet a list of requirements (number of desks, space to store books, etc.) and keep within a budget of $500-$800. Students then presented their proposals to the class. As a whole group, they decided on their top choices.

I was blown away by the creativity, empathy, and teamwork my students demonstrated working on this project.

After a year in quarantine, it is clear that my students deeply want to feel part of a community.

Three main categories emerged: a safe cool down space to take a breather, support for physical needs such as food and toiletries, and enrichment activities to bond with others. The items listed are a combination of their requests and a few activities I know to benefit students.

Upon successful funding, my GATE students will unpack, assemble, and arrange our new room. They will be responsible for storing and checking on our supplies, as well as creating procedures for other classes to use our new space. While my GATE students will helm this project, the space and activities will benefit all 140 of my students, especially my freshmen English classes.
