My Project

Have you ever read children's books about math like Sir Cumference and the Knights of the Round Table or The Mission of Addition? These stories use story-telling and great illustrations to make math concepts more engaging.

Often in school, we create an artificial separation between art, literacy, and math, but I would like my students to be able to fuse all these in their own comic books or math stories.

I would begin with comic books because they are often more approachable for early writers.

This device would allow them to draw as if they were drawing on paper which appeals to their fine motor skills but has the added advantages of digital drawing, allowing them to digitally and more easily manipulate their drawings. It is a tool that is great for a strong STEM education and literacy. It is also something that students from low SES would likely not have access to, so it would create more equity in their education with that of more affluent students.

As a bonus, comic book creation is a great literacy strategy for ESL students because it shows more context and limits vocabulary into more manageable chunks. This tool could also be used for multi-lingual students to create content in different languages.
