Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As the school counselor, I sponsor a small group a fifth grade students called Junior Counselors. This small group of students provides services for our school. We try to build excitement for other students that don't receive it at home. We recently opened a Student Run Bookstore which is fast becoming a BIG hit with all 800 students at Odom Elementary. We offer books at cost for other students on campus. The goal is simply to put books in the hands of students and to give them the opportunity to own books. Most of the students in our community do not have books at home, so we are trying to help them get them. We do not offer the Scholastic Book Fair at our campus, simply because our families cannot afford the prices. Right now, all of our books cost between $1.50 and $4.00, but that is still too high for many of our students. Some students have been able to bring in only $1.00. We won't turn them away from getting a book!! We make a deal with them and sell them a book. For example, a child who only had a $1.00 buys the book from us, but must work for his teacher to pay off their debt. We take a loss, but the child gets a book and the teacher gets the trash in her room picked up. At this time, we are in need of additional funding to purchase more books for our bookstore so that we may continue with our project of getting books into the hands of needy students at Odom Elementary. Currently, we are only able to keep about 200 books in the bookstore due to lack of funds. This sounds like a lot of books, but it doesn't allow a great deal of variety. I would like to eventually increase that number to at least 2000 books.
