Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
This year, I started a new incentive for silent reading time- book bingo. If students get five stickers in a row, they get a nice prize from our school store. If they completely fill their bingo board, they get a dessert of their choice from places like Crumbl or Krispy Kreme. Needless to say, the introduction of book bingo has resulted in a renewed interest in finishing books, as well as experimentation with different genres as students work to read books in all the different categories. We also have a firm "no book shaming" rule in our classroom, so I think students are feeling more comfortable reading whatever makes them happy.
I asked for student requests the other day, and I was surprised by how many books they wanted that I don't already have- things like self-help, poetry by Yung Pueblo, romance, and WWII books.
They have finally moved beyond the stage of wanting short, easy books to wanting more difficult books that actually interest them. And of course, books that will fill up those bingo squares. This grant is a list of their requests!
