This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At ASTHS, in Lincoln Heights, Los Angeles, soccer is more than a sport; it is an opportunity. We play from preseason trainings during the summer and fall, to winter season and postseason. From spring intramural to futsal leagues - our scholar-athletes are always ready. Despite our school’s lack of facilities, our teams train every morning at 6 AM. Our athletes are driven. Our athletes are dedicated. Our athletes do whatever it takes to win, and winning isn’t limited to what happens on the field - all the more impressive because our school community is 98% free and reduced lunch.

It really comes down to opportunity.

For many of our scholar-athletes, a collegiate athletic scholarship does not only mean the money that is obviously essential to their success. For the athletes of ASTHS, being a part of a team at the college level can create an emotional link between their home community and their college experience. In a setting where our students can feel under-represented and isolated, being an athlete can be a lifeline.

My Project

My student-athletes need soccer balls to practice their skills in order to prepare for games. Currently, we only have 8 soccer balls to use between both the boys and girls teams. We have over 60 student-athletes at practice at a time so it is imperative that we have enough equipment for all athletes to be able to practice. With more soccer balls we will be able to do different drills and practice shooting for both the boys and girls teams. It is our goal to prepare our athletes to be the most competitive and in order to do that we need the proper equipment.
