Help Ms. Purvis

I teach painting, drawing, ceramics and basic black and white photography at a rural southern high school. OUr enrollment is 166 students whose nearest shopping community is more than 30 miles from this title I school. Currently we has lost most of our art funding because of budget cuts. My students are incredibly gifted artistically and we need appropriate supplies to exhibit their works and built art portfolios for college submissions. College Art entry applications require students to list the number of art awards received from active exhibitions of their works and awards received.

For the last 7 years my students have been displaying their art on campus on construction black paper tapped to walls. I have recyled our frames and matting supplies to exhaustion. This year we have the opportunity to have a student art exhibit at the arts council for two months during a county wide and nationally recognized arts festival. These students are so dedicated to their arts that they have painted on wall boards, shoes, scrap boards from our carpentry department and 7 students have won scholarships to attend summer art institutes. This April and May The arts council has invited our students to exhibit their art in their gallery. I have invited my previous art students to display their works along side their siblings who are currently enrolled. The "It's a Family Affair" will exhibit 8 years of student work, for which some students have moved more than 500 miles away to attend art universities. I want to empower my students to display their many talents at this small rural school. Current students are attending art club meetings twice a week, who do not take art and taking painting supplies home to work. They are so committed, they wanted to meet during christmas break.

We need frames and matte boards, mounts and "L" pins to frame students' art works. This will solve the professional exhibition problem. It will also serve to build their self-esteem as young artists and give them an opportunity to build professional experiences that encourage application into art colleges and universities. It is my hope that this experience will give them the confidence and pride to take on bigger challenges, not only artistically but academically.

Your help will ensure that young artists from rural communities have a visual voice in the larger art communities. You will make it possible for these students to take the next step as young artists; give their unique community a voice and bring joy to those who have the honor of engaging in their artistic visions. We have planned a press release and for media coverage. I hope you can be a part of these "first time" event for this small community.
