Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students want to use music as a way to make a difference in their school and local community. With this project, they will learn to play the guitar and then lead music-based service activities that promote mental health, emotional well-being, and connection among others.

Once students build confidence with their instruments, they will design and lead a series of outreach activities.

These will include lunchtime “Music for Mindfulness” sessions where they perform calming songs for peers, especially during stressful times like testing weeks. They will also create a “Music & Wellness” day for younger students or special education classes, where they’ll perform, teach simple guitar skills, and lead reflection activities around how music helps with emotional regulation.

Beyond our school walls, students will coordinate short performances for community centers or nursing homes, sharing uplifting music to brighten others' days. These events will be entirely student-planned, from setting up performances to selecting songs and writing scripts to introduce their music and its message of positivity and connection.

Our school community faces many challenges, and students are seeking ways to support one another. This project will empower them to be leaders and role models through music. The guitars requested will be the foundation of this work—giving students the tools to express themselves, collaborate with others, and share music that heals, encourages, and connects.

By combining music, service, and leadership, students will make a meaningful impact on the social and emotional wellness of those around them.
