My Students

The students in my classes are struggling readers and writers, many of them facing learning disabilities and interrupted learning. However, in my class they find a safe space where they are met at their skill level and are able to choose independent reading books that match their interests.

I work at a Title I school that is mostly comprised of students who receive free or reduced lunch.

Many of my students have profound learning and emotional disabilities that have prevented them from feeling successful in the past. However, my school accepts kids as they are and embraces differences. By being in a classroom where they are nurtured rather than ostracized for being struggling readers and writers, we make great gains in both reading level and self-esteem.

My Project

My students read for 40 minutes per week independently in my classroom and they also read for at least an hour per week outside of the classroom for homework. By choosing independent reading books that they are interested in (anything from war stories to graphic novels to love stories!) they are hooked and start to understand why people love to read. It may sound simple; let them choose what they want to read--- but many kids are force to only read class novels that are too difficult for them and turn them off to reading. I am trying to "get them back" and help them see that reading truly is for everyone.

This donation would make a huge difference to my small school.

We cherish books in our library. We have an intricate check-out system that ensures that books are treated well and returned so they can be used by hundreds of students over the course of 2-3 years. We cannot afford as a small public school to get new books on a regular basis for independent reading as most of our budget goes to whole-class texts. Through your support I am able to have a text-rich classroom with lots of choice!
