My Students

The students in our program have a variety of special needs, including Autism, Speech and Language Impairments, and Intellectual Disabilities and are all between the ages of 5-7. One of the biggest challenges they have is sensory processing and regulating their bodies. They need to move.

Our students have fun and learn when they move around and play!

We now have access to our school gymnasium and would like some activities to be able to make the most of our time. We need equipment and tools to plan fun activities.

Structured play and routines set expectations and create an order for all children, but this consistency is particularly important for children on the autism spectrum. Children on the autism spectrum feel safe when there is a consistent and predictable routine in place. With a little planning and the right stuff, we can make the gym another place for learning, growth, and fun!

My Project

Our students need to move and often only go outside or play with their peers when they are in school. Our students have additional needs that can often limit their access to exercise and play compounded with the fact that the COVID virus has kept them inside for almost two years now. We now have the opportunity for our students to run and play in a school gymnasium.

Our goal is to empower education through play!

Structured play will help our students with communication, sensory processing, motor skills, creativity, imagination, critical thinking, and problem-solving all while they are having fun and moving their bodies.

As teachers, planning for play must be intentional. We must plan appropriate individualization for each child's developmental level and focus on creating opportunities for higher-level thinking by incorporating time, space, and materials for play.
