Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a transfer high school. This means that we accept students who, for a myriad of reasons, were not successful in their previous school(s). Many of our students are looking for a second chance at their own education. 70% of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunch and nearly all of our students are students of color who travel from across the city to a different neighborhood in order to attend school. While some of our students are 20- and 21-years-old, some of our students are coming to us directly from middle school, where they have been labeled “over-aged and under-credited” and “at risk" for not completing high school.

Starting over in mixed grade leveled classes requires a strong community where students' basic needs (safety and the feeling of being seen) are met before they can begin learning.

My Project

My co-teacher and I are are currently teaching an elective course for young women called “Grown Women in 2019.” As an end of the year celebration, we would like to bring our young women to see Misty Copeland dance in a production at the American Ballet Theatre.

In our class, we incorporate guest speakers from a variety of professions and fields to discuss topics including: how strengths assessments can help to inform possible career interests, speaking with confidence and clarity, how to dress for interviews versus dressing for "going out," understanding the difference between make-unders and make-overs, building confidence, and bringing our students into spaces they wouldn’t necessarily feel comfortable going into on their own, particularly as young women of color in a white and largely wealthy neighborhood: the very shops and venues that are adjacent to our school and throughout our city.

To see Misty Copeland perform with the American Ballet Theatre would be an iconic end to our class.
