My Students

My students currently attend a year-round school in St. Paul, MN. I have 23 vibrant kindergarten students that truly love to come to school. My class has a very diverse set of needs with 1/2 of the students speaking english as a second language and 1/3 of my students receive special education service. Each day is a new adventure in the world of learning. My students come to school to be fed, feel loved and find their place in this world on top of learning how to be a citizen in today’s world. They enjoy the safety of the community we have built at our school.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of materials to have strong literacy based centers during our independent work time. The items I have asked for will ensure my students are learning the basic set of skills they need to be strong readers and writers. I will use these books during my guided reading period. I plan to read these books in small groups with my students. I will introduce new reading strategies, vocabulary and improve their comprehensions skills. I expect students to work independently on a task/activity, when I pull a small group to work with on a specific reading goal. When I am pulling students in a small group the rest of the class will use the materials I have requested to work together on specific literacy skills: phonics, making words and recognizing letters. By having the requested items in my classroom, it will make for a stronger reading block for all in my room!
