This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a multi-age classroom of children between the ages of 3-6. Our school is one of the few public Montessori Schools in our city. My students are very active and enjoy different hands-on activities.
"The first duty of an education is to stir up life, but leave it free to develop." These are Dr. Maria Montessori's words and I need your help to stir up my children's learning and entice their thirst for knowledge!
Thank you in advance.
My Project
This project is to help my students grow a strong foundation in Mathematics. Research has shown that early math competency is a factor for school success. I would like to help my students gain mastery of the foundational math concepts presented in early childhood. The book list that I have chosen are based on different concepts such as number sense, quantification, number operations and shapes. These books will help my students bridge their engagement and understanding of the topics discussed during Math Talks and other discussions. By using books, I am also ensuring that I integrate different subject areas. The materials requested are effective extensions to our Montessori Math materials. For example, I would read the book "Changes, Changes" by Pat Hutchins to teach how 3D shapes are compose of several shapes. This lesson will bridge literacy and mathematics. With the use of the books I am requesting my students will enjoy stories such as: Tiki Tiki Tembo, Hippos Go Berserk and Grandfather Tan'g Story at the same time they are learning mathematical concepts.
