Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I never teach my pupils. I only provide the conditions in which they can learn." ~ Albert Einstein. Our class is an amazing team of students because we are always setting new goals for ourselves and helping each other to reach those goals.

The students are fourth and fifth grade students in a 12:1 bridge class.

We have special learning needs. Some of us have learning disabilities, speech and language impairments, autism or attention deficit disorders. School is not always an easy place for us. We need a smaller class ratio so that we can stay focused. Most of us are also English Language Learners. We work with a special education teacher, an ESL teacher, an educational associate, a guidance counselor, a speech and language pathologist and an occupational therapist. We love soccer and learning about science topics. Sometimes we need our teachers to give us extra time to complete tasks or to repeat a lesson multiple times. We learn best when we incorporate all of our senses. We frequently need movement breaks to help us maintain our attention to a task. Regardless, we are always striving to be leaders of ourselves and others!

My Project

We, the girls in our class, love the Babysitter's Club Graphic Novels! We love them because we identify with the strong female characters in this series. We are strong, independent women who often babysit our younger siblings and cousins. We are leaders and we admire the young women in this series. It is so fun to pick up books with characters that we see in ourselves! Kristy, Stacey, Claudia, Maryann, Dawn and Mallory are admirable because they started their own business and they like to help in their community. They are also like real kids because they are not perfect. They make mistakes and learn from their experiences. We love these characters so much, we decided to dress up as them for Favorite Book Character Day!

Reading is not always easy for us because most of us have print disabilities.

However, these graphic novels illustrated by Raina Telgemeier and Gale Galligan are really exciting to read! We cannot put these books down! We love to read them together and our teacher has noticed how much we love these books! She has been teaching us about accountable book talk through book clubs just like the students in GE classes are participating in! It is so motivating to read when you know your friends are depending on you to have a great book talk! Graphic novels are fun to read because we do not have to do the work of deciphering text and envisioning the plot! When we read graphic novels, our brains begin to play the comic strip like a movie! Our brains do the same amount of work that you might do if you were reading a chapter book. We get to talk and think about character, plot, theme and vocabulary on our own terms!
