My Students

Last year we hit the jackpot and were gifted a color printer from donors through this website! While we were able to print out all of the visual/picture cues and social stories we needed, our years-old laminating machine had had enough and completely fell apart by the end of the year.

My preschool students have a mixture of abilities ranging from "highly verbal with some articulation issues," to "not verbal, but imitating sounds or gestures." In order to help these children to communicate, we use a lot of different modalities, including picture cues.

If you have ever worked in special education, you know: we LOVE our picture cards! The students quickly learn what the pictures represent and often are able to pair instruction with pictures, making it easier for them to navigate the school day.

My Project

I am requesting a laminating machine to replace our old laminating machine that broke at the end of year after we made dozens of picture cues we previously did not have. As we continue to get new students, we find that the pictures or social stories we need are different or otherwise not currently available, so we find ourselves making new ones. In order for the materials to last for more than a day in our preschool classrooms, laminating is a must. Our students are tiny, but they need sturdy materials to guide them throughout the day and year. Additionally, we as teachers will be able to create social stories for our students as they are needed. Both social stories and picture cues are highly effective in our classroom to teach skills that are necessary for development and classroom participation.

With a laminating machine, we will be able to create pictures, stories, and other activities (such as folder activities) that our students will be able to use over and over again.

This will help with learning academic concepts, developing social skills, and self-regulation. All of these are important for our students to thrive in their school environment and beyond. Please help us make materials strong enough for our preschoolers!
