Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Currently I am working in a special education, substantially separate classroom for students in grades 3-5 in an urban setting.

The students I work with have to deal with many obstacles at home and in school. They have to deal with being pulled out of their regular classroom into a self contained special education classroom which is a very small room. They are old enough to understand that they struggle in reading and writing. Because of this, they refuse to read, write and do math. They will become easily frustrated. This in turn has an impact on their academic progress. In this classroom I have tried to show the children how fun and important reading, writing and math is with a hands-on approach.

The items I chose are to be used across curriculum. A couple of the items are puzzles that reinforce phonemic awareness. Along with the puzzles there is a writing kit that teaches children how to read and respond to nonfiction, which can be challenging. One thing I have found my students love is listening to audiobooks. I have chosen audiobooks that adhere to the Social Studies and Science curriculum. Lastly I have a couple of activities for math centers. These are at a level where they can work independently and show progress in their math skills. Your help will ensure that my students will build a confidence level in their reading that will give them self confidence in life as a whole. They will become stronger readers and writers. Along with that it will help them to meet their goals and objectives on their Individualized Education Plans. Your support would be greatly appreciated by all of my students.

In this classroom I have tried to show the children how fun and important reading, writing and math is with a hands-on approach.
