My Students

Enthusiastic, excited, social and eager would all be words I can use to describe my class. Despite their academic limitations, they are eager to please and always willing to help a staff member or student in need. They come from a diverse set of ethnic and religious backgrounds ranging all over Queens, NY. My students have a variety of disabilities, such as Down Syndrome, Autism, Emotional Disturbance and Intellectual Disability. They range in age from 11 to 13, from verbal to nonverbal. Despite their apparent and disabilities, they have many abilities that make them unique and special.

My Project

My students need fine motor activities to improve independence in ADL skills and increase pre-writing ability. Many of our students need assistance when using the bathroom on their own, particularly with fastener management such as buttons, snaps or zippers. We are also working towards independence during transition time and when leaving the classroom by having students put on their jackets on their own.

Your generous donations will be helpful to help all our students to access the classroom and school curriculum with more independence by using tools that are in line with their developmental levels.

In addition, we have many non-writers or pre-writers in our classroom who are using manipulatives and fine motor tools to improve hand function. We are asking for lacing, zipper, and snap boards which will enable our students to gain independence so they can be able to dress themselves and use the bathroom without staff assistance. Other supplies like the lacing word beads, alphabet learning locks, Geostix, and gumball grab activity will promote literacy, reading skills as well as fine motor skills. The rainbow art set will help students who are non-writers to complete multiple choice answers or interact during whole group activities to the best of their abilities. Fine motor activities will help our students be independent in school and at home and will be beneficial to them as they begin to transition into worksites as they get older.
