My Students

Our class is starting the “Road To Statehood” unit. We will learn about the economic, social and political transformation after the 1850’s. "The Hope Chest" by Karen Schwabach will become a personal way to attach to the reading and make connections. It is an opportunity to bring the past to the present!

Our school is located in East Los Angeles.

It is an urban school that serves about 520 students. Among these students, there are 45 fourth graders who are very energetic and eager to learn. Most of them are English learners and come from low-income families. They are ready to take any opportunity to excel to the next level, and become English proficient.

My Project

Our class is starting a unit called the “Road To Statehood." In this unit students will be learning about economic, social, and political power in the period of transformation from an agricultural to industrial economy after the 1850s. In order to see the growth and change from a first person account, we have chosen to read the book called "The Hope Chest" by Karen Schwabach. This book aligns with many Common Core standards. Through this book students will be able to appreciate some significant historical accounts and the passing of important laws, such as Jim crow, prohibition, shell shock and auto campaign.

The donations to this project will improve the literacy program in our classroom.

It will add to our library books that have a purpose, and enhance the quality of literature. This book will offer the students the opportunity to embrace history from the point of view of a child who is about their own age. We will be truly indebted if you could make this book a reality for each of our students. If each students has a copy it will become a personal way to attach to the reading and make connections.
