Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at my school are from minority families in poverty. There is a focus on arts education so they are very much enthusiastic about self-expression through the arts. Many of our students have siblings in the building so establishing a strong instrumental music program is an endeavor that affects not only one child in a household, but has the potential to impact entire families. They have already given performances and would benefit greatly from support through Donors Choose. Thank you for your consideration.

My Project

ACCION Academy is a comprehensive middle school trying to establish a school Band. We have the support of administration and the community to this end. The performing arts are held in high regard at our school. The students are enthusiastic about the opportunity to play an instrument and express themselves through music. We are requesting starter instruments from the Brass & Woodwind families.

The objective of this project is to acquire enough Flutes, Clarinets, Trumpets and Trombones to start the beginning band.

Establishing a school concert band would serve as a great recruiting tool and increase community involvement on our campus.

Currently, our students are receiving music instruction in theory and history to establish a strong foundation upon which to build an instrumental music program. They have also been “fitted” and assigned one of the aforementioned instruments to begin learning.

Students benefit greatly from learning to play a musical instrument, and being part of an ensemble, each of which fosters values that certainly enhance character development. On an individual level, they learn about personal discipline, perseverance to work through challenges, raising expectations of themselves and having confidence in their abilities. As members of a performing arts group, they learn the values of teamwork by contributing to a larger goal, being responsible for playing their part at the highest level and feel the sense of belonging to something bigger than themselves, which also begets confidence.

Our building houses an elementary school on the first two floors which would serve as a strong feeder program through the promotion of our middle school concert band. We hope to grow our students and build a more dynamic school community through the performing arts. Attaining the requested instruments would most definitely be a great step.
