This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a vibrant community where major art forms were created and developed. They love to sing and dance and to play instruments. Students will often stop by my classroom or stop me in the hallway or in the cafeteria to ask what instrument they will get to play that day. My classroom is a place for children to explore and try out the different sounds in their world and the roles they can play in music making.
My Project
My students love to play instruments to accompany songs and games. A bass xylophone and more Boomwhackers will increase their opportunity to do so. Last year, we had some extra funds and purchased two sets of Boomwhackers and they were a big hit! One of my 3rd Graders’ favorite activities was playing a countermelody with the Irish Folk Song “Cliffs of Doneen.” Students broke into small groups to play the instruments together. One student held up the music, while the rest of the students played the instruments. They then switched parts. My students had to communicate what to play and when with each other. They also had to figure out how to take turns. One of my favorite moments from this school year was during a new student’s first music class. He was new to the country and was learning English. He looked a little nervous at the beginning of class but I caught him smiling when he was playing a Boomwhacker. I’m looking forward to more moments like this.
