My Students

When you walk into my classroom you will see a group of enthusiastic 2nd graders, full of energy! I tell my students a secret on the very first day of school. I tell them that each and every one of them were intentionally chosen to be in my classroom because they are the best students in this school! From that moment on, they walk a little taller, and hold their heads a little higher, because they believe that they are!

I teach in an inner-city Title 1 school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where 100 percent of our students are eligible for free breakfast and free lunch.

Many students at my school receive a weekend food bag, something they eagerly look forward to. So many of our students are homeless so the food bag helps to sustain them over the weekend. We talk a lot about having a growth mindset in our classroom. All 17 of my students know that it's OK to make a mistake because that is how we learn. We don't give up when something is hard, and it's never I CAN'T IT'S ALWAYS I CAN!

My Project

My students get angry and frustrated very easily. All it takes to set one of them off is a perceived "look" or an accidental bump.

"Why are you looking at me?" "Why did you 'hit' me?

"He's making fun of me." "She's telling secrets about me." I hear these kinds of comments all day long. Many of my students come from spaces I cannot even imagine living in - abuse, violence, hunger, neglect...you name it, they have felt it. They walk through the metal detectors in the morning angry at the world. It's hard for them to leave whatever baggage they are carrying at the door.

When they enter my classroom I can almost see their shoulders relax, a smile creeps across their faces, they laugh and feel safe. Having a stress ball at each students desk will allow them to get rid of any angry feelings they might bring with them, as well as deal with problems they might encounter throughout the day. With the anger and the stress of their lives gone...we can begin our day of learning.
