My Students

My students attend an NYC DOE Title I school in Brooklyn. Every day, our school warmly opens its doors to a highly diverse group of 1,500 middle school students. Our schools is extra special because it welcomes students from throughout the borough opposed to being a zoned school.

Our goal for all students is to have them engage in transformation and differentiated learning experiences.

My students have a variety of learning levels within a class. It is important to create strategies and materials that encourage students to become independent and critical thinkers rather than just receivers of information.

My Project

I have requested highlighters and will use them to separate the different components of an extended response. This technique is used to aid students in formatting and provide further assistance in developing analysis. The containers and rubber bands will be used to keep the highlights organized. I plan on rubber banding three different colors of highlighters together and storing them in the containers. This will maintain organization of materials for students' classroom use and provide them the ability to sign the highlighters out. The printer paper will allow me to print templates for my students, so they are able to plan their writing before they commit to their final drafts.

Last year, my students' scores increased 6.4% on the NYS ELA Exam from the previous year’s!

I have utilized highlighters as a writing strategy throughout my teaching career. I believe the support of templates and highlighting contributed to this increase.

In my school, we use a writing technique called MEAEAL (Main Idea, Evidence (Textual), Analysis, Evidence (Textual), Analysis, Link) to help students organize their constructed responses. The students highlight the various sections in different colors. This strategy helps the students and I assess what section needs to be developed further, if the evidence is longer than the analysis and the order with which they are organizing their information.
