My Students

“Every student can learn, just not on the same day, or the same way.” -George Evans Strengthening students' life skills to help them find success in their own way to become productive citizens is significant in opening doors for the transition to adulthood and to post-secondary opportunities.

Our Community Based Instruction classroom consists of 13 special needs students (ages 14-19) with disabilities ranging from Autism to Intellectual and Learning Disabilities.

My students have a strong desire and excitement to learn and bring so much kindness and joy to our school's campus. They have a wide range of learning styles, abilities and strengths; each is unique in their own way. They all celebrate each others' success and look out for one another when they are feeling down. They all have a hilarious sense of humor and keep our classroom entertained. These rays of sunshine make our classroom a pretty wonderful place to be! An area of need for all my students is the development of real-life functional skills.

My Project

We need a money activity station, a restaurant math problem solving kit, a filling out forms practice book, a market math book, a building real-life reading skills book, a vocabulary and reading skills for life book, and a curriculum that will strengthen students' independence and target functional academic, domestic, community, and vocational skills. It also will allow students to monitor and chart their own growth. In my classroom, these materials will be used to create hands-on learning activities. Academics, communication and social skills are incorporated into the class through centers-based learning. Trips to community locations occur concurrently with classroom instruction. These resources will help drive instruction at my center work stations to help students develop mastery of necessary skills, allowing them to find success and strengthen their life skills, ultimately allowing them to be marketable for employment and post-secondary options and also to discover their own potential.

Students will initially learn and practice skills in the classroom with these materials, eventually practicing the skills by applying them in the community setting.

Students will increase appropriate behaviors for work and community settings, increase independence and mobility, and build the ability to generalize skills and knowledge to new situations. These classroom materials will allow my students to learn necessary skills to become active and productive adults and to find success.
