This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school supports the learning needs of all students. The school offers a program for students with autism, emotional behavior disorders, and other learning disabilities. Based on the needs of the students' diverse sensory needs, the school is creating two sensory rooms to help students regulate and access their education. Our mission is to provide students with the communication, social, cognitive and life skills necessary to enable them to function effectively and as independently as possible in the least restrictive environment.

My Project

We are creating a sensory room at our school to help students respond through thoughts, feelings, motor responses (behavior), or a combination of these. The sensory objects like lights and soft objects with an ocean theme will help our students with autism and other behavioral needs. They often struggle dealing with such information and can become stressed or anxious and at times can feel physical pain. Supporting their social and emotional needs are important as they can interfere with their academic and daily needs.

This sensory room will be integrated with the school’s structured teaching model.

The sensory room will provide a specific location that offers an important sense of familiarity. Providing students a sense of continuity, physical and language stimulation, and social interaction, the sensory room helps increase student attention and concentration.
