Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am lucky enough to work in an urban Special Education Inclusion classroom with 24 students in first, second, and third grades. We are a high need, public, Montessori school with an incredibly diverse population.

Due to budget cuts across our district, our science specialist position has been cut. This weekly science class was the time students were actively engaged in hands-on exploration and experiments. Losing this valuable resource threatens students' opportunity to participate in investigations that foster scientific reasoning and critical thinking skills because our classrooms are not as well-equipped as the science room for this purpose. Our one science room cannot be dismantled to supply the elementary classrooms adequately.

To meet this need, science instruction in the classroom needs to change. I need to incorporate many more active investigations and experiments into my instruction so that the students can develop their scientific procedural and reasoning skills. To do this, we will need activities that support our district and state learning standards and the supplies to complete them. These science tubs will provide well-coordinated, engaging investigations, the initial supplies, and independent follow-up activities. Integrating literacy instruction with content studies strengthens both areas for students. As they learn to read, they also read to learn. The accompanying libraries will provide the perfect opportunity for this reinforcement through literacy activities. Students will not be limited to studying science during science time; they will be able to learn about matter during reading lessons as well as during choice reading. They will be able to be immersed in scientific study.

You can help students learn science content, scientific thinking, and literacy skills at the same time by helping fund this project. The combination of nonfiction reading connected to current science topics and the hands-on activities will bring science to life for students in ways they might not have until much later. With your donation, you can make it possible for students to experience the wonder and awe that comes from formulating hypotheses and then designing and conducting science experiments to test them.
