This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My third grade tinkerers are part of an amazing school in Brooklyn, New York. Our thriving community has big hopes and dreams, but our students don’t always have access to essential learning materials. Some of them face additional challenges, as they are second language learners. In spite of these roadblocks, my students are enthusiastic scholars with boundless curiosity and creativity! Their zest for exploring and learning continually renews my own passion for learning and reminds me why I love my job.

My Project

Though teaching is always a challenge, creating a culture of reading has not been difficult in this classroom. The majority of my students are already avid and passionate readers, and independent reading time is a much-loved part of the day. However, as their reading levels continue to progress, we are in need of more Spanish level books in our library. Meanwhile, students who are still reading at lower levels in Spanish need highly-engaging Spanish picture books to boost their confidence in themselves as Spanish readers and keep them moving forward.
