Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the privilege of teaching fourth graders in all core subjects. I have known almost my entire class since they were in kindergarten. I have watched them grow into responsible and caring individuals that support each other.

My fourth graders are bursting with curiosity and the will to learn as much as they can.

They are strong willed and filled with personality. Although they are chatty, they are often helping each other learn and asking questions.

My students attend a high poverty school with Title I services. English language learners make up half of our student population. What our school lacks in resources, we make up for in determination to succeed.

My Project

Fiction! Nonfiction! Poems! Debates! Drama! Biographies!

My students deserve access to engaging, timely, and well-written text.

Storyworks is a comprehensive magazine for students at the intermediate level. There are six issues throughout the year and they are each 32 pages in length. Instead of containing only nonfiction articles or only works of fiction, Storyworks is comprised of multiple genres at multiple reading levels. The best part is that the magazine includes types of text that students don't see as often, like debates and plays.

In addition to the physical magazine, there are digital resources to enhance their reading experience. The magazine can be projected on the board so that we can read and annotate the text together. The stories are also provided in a digital format at multiple Lexile levels so that all students can access the content. Audio articles are included for the students to listen to the articles. Each issue incorporates highlighted vocabulary words into a slideshow for the students to help enhance their own vocabulary.

I will use these magazines in my classroom in multiple ways. The more difficult, unfamiliar types of text I will read with my class as a whole group. I will be able to teach mini lessons and focus on comprehension skills that my students need extra support with. I will also use the texts in small group instruction. Since the articles can be differentiated, I can use the same article at my students' instructional level to best meet their needs. In writing, my students can write reading responses about what they read or complete one the the many extension activities Storyworks provides that connects to the Common Core standards.
