This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have three classes of twenty-four fourth graders in a Title I school. The students in my class have a variety of different needs, including learning disabilities, ADHD, and English language learners. My kids are hard workers and have various skill levels.
They tend to be more interested in school when the material is fun and they can relate to it.
They always have that "aha" moment when I use their interests to teach them. I find that they are more apt to remember information that is taught to them when it relates to things that are currently going on around them.
Many of them do not like to read, but I have found them looking at and reading my old magazines from a couple of years ago with a lot of interest, so I know they will love this!
My Project
My students need resources to help them become stronger readers. A set of 24 subscriptions to Storyworks Jr. will fulfill that need. If I am able to get a Scholastic StoryWorks Jr. subscription for my class, we will have access to a variety of texts in one place that we do not currently have. StoryWorks Jr. provides multiples types of texts, such as literature, nonfiction, drama, or poetry. The stories are leveled so my lower level students and ELL (English Language Learners) can be as successful as my students that are on or above grade level.
We would have so many new and interesting types of texts to dive deeply into.
In addition to these new types of text, we would also have access to grammar work, vocabulary, and many other resources to improve as readers, writers, and students in general.
