I am a first year elementary school librarian in a Pre-K -5th grade school with an 82% free and reduced lunch rate in a semi-rural area in Georgia. The students at our school are very sweet. They are very eager to learn and their enthusiasm serves as my fuel. I get energized by their excitement and I want to do more and more for the children each day. My raucous readers really require a rug!
Last year, the school had to be shut down due to serious environmental issues. The students and staff were temporarily relocated to another building thirty miles away for a period of months. This hardship meant that the students did not have regular access to a school library in the 2008-2009 school year. As the new school librarian, I am providing my students with engaging stories and activities to promote a lifelong love of reading and learning. They are very hungry for knowledge and enjoy coming to the library, especially after not having access to a library last year. When I arrived at this school and saw there was no rug in the library I was disappointed because I know that students focus a lot better when they have their own defined personal space.
Our library needs a semi-circle rug, so each student will have their own personal space and a great view of me reading the book. Students could relax and enjoy storytime knowing that other students would not be “moving into their space” and pushing or leaning on them. The shape of the rug would make every spot “the best seat in the house.”
If you are able to help with this project, you would be helping a large number of children be more engaged with reading during storytime (and other lessons) on a daily basis since the entire student body visits the library. Not having a rug is a struggle; I seat children (especially the Pre-K-3rd graders) on an “invisible rug” and they play along with me. However, if each student had a designated spot to sit in on a real rug, I know that their experience would be so much more relaxed and enjoyable. The brain research shows that when students are happy and relaxed, they learn much more. Please help our students learn more by assisting us with this rug!
