Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a neighborhood school with many families living within two miles. My students are a joy to teach. We are a Title I school, and the boys and girls represent a diverse population. All the students enjoy library classes once per week. I do a variety of activities with my students and always want to incorporate more. Literacy and technology are our primary focus in the library, and students get so excited to learn new things in different and unique ways.

The majority of my students do not speak English at home.

They are all enrolled in our English Language Learners program. Even though they are learning a new language, they work hard and enjoy learning new things in different ways. The students enjoy our guided illustration lessons that accompany our storytime books.

My Project

My students would love a new collection of books to add to our illustration literature review set. Each week we select a different book to read and illustrate. I have guided drawing lessons to go with each of these books. After storytime, we discuss the different story elements such as character, setting, problem, and solutions. Then we do a guided illustration lesson. Students then write about their favorite part of the story on the back of their illustration.

My students need a collection of new books for our next guided illustration unit.

Students remember illustrating different characters from our books during storytime. This spikes interest in these characters. Students will often check these books out then ask for similar books to read. It is my goal to make as many lifelong readers as I can while I am an elementary librarian. Our past storytime with illustration lessons has gotten many students hooked on a specific author or book character.
