My Students

Have you ever heard a story read by your favorite author? How about your favorite poem accompanied by music? My students are waiting for this opportunity.

Our school is located in the heart of the inner city of Los Angeles.

From our playground we have the majestic view of the high rises of downtown. My students are children of hard working parents who never see their kids till sundown. Many are here from morning to late evening. Their experiences of the world are very limited to school and the playground. My students come from homes where the language is one other than English. As the teacher I feel compelled to offer as many experiences as my budget would allowed. I have searched the school for as many computers as I can. Although they are old the students enjoy going online for lessons and activities that require outside glimpses of our society. Most of my students have never been outside of their neighborhoods. Yet they are eager to learn and be part of the community that they live in. They are all part of the free and reduced lunch. They come from lower economic backgrounds yet their spirits are rich and ready to fly!

My Project

As an inner city teacher of 2nd and 3rd grade students I have a great responsibility to ensure a great diversity of experiences within the classroom. I have two working PCs that I use as working stations in the classroom. The students get excited to go online and research many projects. Yet, there are so many ways to use the computer station but we are limited because they are missing speakers. A component that I would like to add is a listening station. In this way students can go online and listen to stories or I can play all the CDs that are for their use in the adopted reading program. But, in order to put all this into practice and create the listening station we need the speakers and headphones. This will enrich students experience in the classroom. Listening to English by expert readers will help my English Language Learners develop their ear.

The speakers and headphone sets will make a big difference to our classroom.

The classroom environment will be enriched, as students listen to their favorite stories. With speakers and headphones we can create a powerful listening station where students will get the opportunity to visualize the story. The children will be able to listen to their favorite author as they retell their favorite adventure.
