My Students

Students love the independence that comes with reading centers and books on CD. Listening centers allow children to listen to stories at their own pace and provides the independence to select books based on their interest. It is a perfect way to increase students’ reading interest.

My students are mostly English Language learners and are eager to learn!

Our school is public and is located in Southern California. Most students experience listening centers in Kindergarten, but once they move on to upper grades they also move on to regular books. Who doesn't enjoy story time or listening to a story, just for they joy of listening? Listening centers are an essential tool to support early literacy, independence, responsibility and most importantly successful readers.

My Project

My students will benefit tremendously with a listening center in the classroom. Students will have opportunities to quietly listen to a story they have already heard, while intently studying the illustrations as they follow along in the book; perhaps it will be an opportunity to preview a story before it is introduced to the class. Children will be able to listen to a story over and over if they like, or listen to a new one every time! They will learn about fables, classic tales and rhyme. Students will increase their vocabulary as they become literate, independent readers.

This project is very important because our 1st grade class does not currently have a listening center.

My dream is to provide my students with a classroom that provides them the opportunity to enjoy literacy and take ownership of their own education.
