My Students

Teaching in the extremely diverse and picturesque neighborhood of Ditmas Park, Brooklyn is a rewarding experience. My classroom is full of eager and excited learners from all over the world who teach me new things every day. These children love coming to school where they grow as readers, writers, mathematicians, and scientists. Our school offers some amazing music and art programs through which our students learn to express themselves in different ways. They take pride in their work and enjoy sharing it with each other and with their families. Many of our wonderful families join us in our classrooms to engage in our learning as often as possible.

The advantages to being part of such a unique and richly diverse school community also come with countless hardships that we strive to overcome together every day.

Many of our students are living in poverty and we have high populations of students with disabilities and English Language Learners. Even with a love for learning, many of our students are reading far below grade level, which often carries over to struggles in writing and math as well. I want to give my students every possible resource to help them reach their potential.

My Project

The most popular time of the day in our classroom is our daily "read aloud." When we gather together on the carpet in our meeting area, every voice turns off and every face lights up as my students wait to preview the pictures in a new picture book or hear what obstacles our favorite character will overcome in the next chapter of our class novel. I do my best to make the stories come alive while modeling important reading strategies and it warms my heart when I hear children laughing at a funny part or gasping during a suspenseful moment. When we finish reading a story together, the book is placed in "Ms. Coven's Favorite Read Alouds" basket. These books rarely stay in that basket for long because my students put them in their book baggies so they can enjoy the story again.

The truth is that for some of the children in my class, this is the only time during their day that someone will read to them.

I have found that students who are reading far below grade level are able to shine during read aloud time by raising their hand to answer comprehension questions I ask or to share their own ideas about the story.

By donating to this project, you will help me continue bringing stories to life for my students and encouraging children to become lifelong lovers of reading.
