My Students

My high school students are Deaf/Hard of Hearing. Because of this, they have difficulty acquiring English language skills - what hearing people learn by osmosis, must be directly taught to my students.

My Deaf/HoH students are amazingly creative!

They come up with the funniest ideas and stories, and I love hearing their points of view on a variety of topics. Because English is a difficult area for many of my students, I am incorporating UDL strategies to help them succeed in the classroom.

My Project

I have a strong focus on creative writing in my classes. Due to the students' difficulty and discomfort with writing in English, I need a video camera and tripod in order to give them an effective way to sign their thoughts out loud.

When the students review their videos, they will then be able to transcribe themselves.

The challenge, at that point, changes to ensure that the written word matches their signed videos. With this resource, I hope to help the students understand the benefit of written English as an effective mode of communication and to see their weaknesses and strengths in both languages.
