This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are fifth and third graders in a high-needs school in the Bronx. Our school used to be set in a dilapidated building, but our wonderful community of families, teachers, and staff fought for our students to have a school building they deserve. After six years, we continue to fight for equity for our students.

My students are bright and creative, with tons of wonderful ideas.

However, recent budget cuts threaten their access to the arts. Your support would help our students receive the resources they need and deserve.

My Project

This project will bring Story Pirates to our school for an assembly. Story Pirates teaching artists are performers who will put on an Idea Storm assembly at our school, taking suggestions from the students to create stories on the spot, while helping them identify key elements of composition and narrative structure, such as plot, character, obstacles and resolution.

With an emphasis on creative problem solving and non-violent conflict resolution, the Idea Storm assembly will leave students with the tools to start writing, and the excitement to let their imaginations take the lead.

My students will be inspired to get their ideas down on paper, and more engaged in the writing process overall. My students will also be performing their own stories at the end of our fiction writing unit, so this assembly will be a great model for them!
