Help me give my students books they can use to learn about black history. My students will use these books to research and create a presentation of famous people of color.

Dr. Seuss said it best. “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Reading is a skill many of us may take for granted. For my students, the ability to read in English is no small task!
I teach reading, speaking, writing and listening skills to 5th and 6th graders, who come from diverse backgrounds where their primary language is not English.
My students have varying levels of English proficiency in reading and writing. The ultimate goal is to become fluent in English. My students are not only learning English but are also learning how to function and succeed in an English speaking, public school. They are learning and welcoming American culture into their own lives.
Our school is a low income/high poverty, urban, public, intermediate school. 100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch each school day. My students strive to succeed, even when many odds are stacked against them. My students inspire me daily, that great and mighty things are possible and achievable.
My Project
Not only is black history important in February, but all year round. I want my students to see and learn about examples of strong and powerful people who have overcome obstacles and challenges. With these resources, my students will be able to research some influential black Americans in history. These books will offer stories to my students of multiple African Americans who rose up for what they believed in, persevered when the odds were stacked against them, and pressed on.
My students will each research an influential person, then create and present a display to educate others of these influential African Americans in history.
Help me expose my students to strong, influential, and powerful people in history through reading and writing!
