Stories From Watts

My students need examples of excellent narratives in order to write their own personal narratives. They need class sets of "The Circuit: Stories from the Life of a Migrant Child" and "Jazmin's Notebook" to have the chance to spark a love for reading.

My Students

Students need opportunities to be engaged. Many students fear or even dislike reading because they have not had the opportunity to read excellent literature. Both of these narratives provide students with a basic plot that is engaging, thoughtful, and interesting.

My students are amazing.

Despite enduring difficult circumstances, these students are fantastic. They attend a public school in California and the students and the school could use additional resources. The students want to improve their lives and they want to prepare themselves for high school. They are focused, endearing, creative, and intelligent.

My Project

I became an English teacher because I enjoyed getting lost in literature. These novels The Circuit: Stories from the Life of a Migrant Child Franci and Jazmin's Notebook have the chance to engage students and perhaps spark a love in reading. I had class sets of both of these novels and I used them every year at my previous school. The two novels were always favorites with the students. I enjoyed the literature because it is poignant and relevant. It causes the students to think about life, relationships, and other important issues. As we work through the novels, the students will learn important lessons for life, and for many, it may be the first novel they read in school. This type of experience can be transformative. I know because I have seen it.

My students are expected to read but they do not have adequate access to great literature.

We have a library but the books are old, beaten up, and not current. Both of these novels are relevant and current. They will read these novels in class and we will write essays that deal with the main themes of the novel. This type of writing and reading will prepare them for the rigors of high school.
