Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Free Napoleon! He's been suffocating in dry, formal history tomes all these years, but "Story of the World" lets him be the neurotic overachiever that made him such a fascinating figure in the first place. My students desperately need a textbook that makes history accessible and understandable.

I work at an inner-city school where over 90% of the students qualify for free lunch.

Within that demographic, I teach global history to predominately ESL students. They face the usual challenges of their environment, including lack of space, funding, support, and time to study, but on top of that they must adjust to a new life in the United States. My students are from Yemen, Dominican Republic, Bangladesh, Ivory Coast, and more. They're still in the process of learning English, but in the meantime, they're expected to keep up and pass standardized exams. As one can imagine, finding resources that have adequate coverage of the content AND language at the appropriate reading level--while all the time maintaining students' interest--is quite a challenge. We do have textbooks right now--but besides being unreadable they are hardcover, which means students are not allowed to take them home.

My Project

The books I am requesting are the best history texts I've yet to encounter when it comes to young people. These books tell history as a story, transforming the usual dates and list of wars into a tale of interesting characters and places. I find that students easily remember that Peter the Great helped westernize Russia because "he was the guy who went around cutting people's beards off, right?" The language is not the usual academic obfuscation that requires ESL students to look up every single word before deciding they still don't understand it, but contains lower level vocabulary and sentence structure. Equally important, these books are small paperbacks that can be taken home and brought to school whenever necessary.

Can a book really make that much of a difference in a class?

Absolutely. For one thing, I could say that the exam pass rate shot up from 40% to 85% last year when I used these books for the first time. But the bigger part of it is that I have observed students enjoying what they are reading with these books. I've even seen kids who never do their homework reading ahead "for fun." You wouldn't see that happen with the 10lb textbook, that's for sure.
