This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am teaching in a new classroom for part of the day and there are very few shelves and only basic classroom furniture. I want to make our library more inviting and I also need storage. Storage benches are great as an optional reading place for students. I also need stools for small group work.

Some students, especially low readers, need help to stay engaged with reading.

In order to help support all students I want to have a table for small group guided reading. I usually work with 3 to 6 students who are at the same reading level to give them guided instruction on specific skills that they are missing. For example, some students are able to decode but do not pay attention to what they read and are not able to answer questions about it. Students with comprehension needs require someone to ask them questions about what they read, introduce new vocabulary and help them to reflect on what they read. These stools would be a great addition for the students!

Once students are able to read the books that are appropriate for them they need help to stay motivated and focused. Having a special place to read motivates them to read more. Storage benches can also double as hiding places for things such as cushions, books or other classroom things.
