My Students

I believe that making each student feel safe in the classroom is key to getting a great education. In my class, I want all my students to feel that our classroom is a safe environment to express and celebrate their differences, and we promote this with #StopTheBulling.

Our school has been a part of our community for over sixty years, and our 800+ student population truly reflects the diversity of our city.

In my fifth grade class, I feel that it is important to promote the concept of individuality and being true to oneself. Fifth graders are very impressionable and are on the cusp of becoming preteens, a time where many differences become noticeable. Teaching is not just about reading, writing, and math, but also about teaching students life skills that they will carry on beyond school halls. I want to know that I have helped prepare my students for what is to come in middle school. When they encounter others that may not conform to their standard of a stereotypical student, I want to feel that they are prepared to be accepting and kind verse bulling others for their differences.

My Project

My students need a unique way to openly discuss the serious issue of bullying and the strategies to overcome bullies. This will include 27 copies of The Phantom Bully, two sets of posters, and books such as He's A Bully, Charlie Brown, The Invisible Boy, and Confessions of a Former Bully. This project promotes the importance of bullying prevention. By funding this project, you will help by giving our class an awesome class read-aloud, a video related to bullying, classroom posters, and additional books on bullying for our class library. As a huge Star Wars fan, I was excited to see that Jeff Brown highlighted the issues of bullying in his third installment of Jedi Academy entitled "The Phantom Bully". I felt that a class set of this book would be a fun and exciting read aloud at the beginning of each year to help start an open class discussion on bullying and ways to prevent it. In addition to the class read aloud, I would like to include some great books on bullying for our class library, such as Weird, The Invisible Boy, Bully BEANS, Lying up a Storm and Confessions of a Former Bully. To further promote such an important issue, I have asked for "He's a Bully Charlie Brown" DVD as well as bully awareness posters for our classroom.

By funding this project, you are helping to brighten up the lives of students that have felt bullied before.

It is important for kids to know that people care and that there is someone to talk to. By talking about bullying, we are drawing a line of what is acceptable and what is not. This promotes happier students and a more enlightened classroom.
