Help Mrs. Boitnott

I absolutely LOVE my job as the guidance counselor at Bonne E'cole Elementary School, which I have been for the last three years, but one thing is disturbing me which is the increase in the amount of referrals I receive for bullying. The population I work with is Kindergarten through fifth grade so the majority of them are shocked when I tell them that what they are doing is bullying. Most children in elementary school think of bullying as beating someone up, but what I attempt to educate them about is that bullying goes far beyond just physical violence. I would like to have more in depth guidance lessons for the nearly 700 students at my school about what bullying is, how it affects people, and what they can do to avoid being bullies, what they can do if they are being bullied, and what they can do if they see someone being bullied. Through my lessons I hope they learn that the name calling, gossiping, rumor spreading, leaving someone out, etc. behaviors are also bullying. I have noticed disrespectful behavior and want to see a change. A lot of people will say, "boys will be boys," "girls are catty," and "kids are just cruel," but I feel that that is making excuses for their behavior and letting them get away with inexcusable behavior and we all need to take a more proactive role to stop these behaviors. My school is very interested in enforcing more consequences to prevent these behaviors from continuing. Since we have such a strong passion regarding this, I would like some more resources in my school counseling library that I can use in my guidance lessons with the children. My students love videos so I have found several videos on bullying that I would like to use. I do think talking to the children is effective but when children can see firsthand what bullying looks like it has more of an impact. I think these videos will do just that. I will also be having social skills groups for children next year who are having difficulty showing respect. The videos will be used a lot in this setting as well. The videos will also be used in parent trainings, as well as in the counselor library for check out. I do hope that you will consider my grant request because I truly think this program can make a difference. Thank you for your consideration!
