Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students enrolled in my program, the Hospital Homebound Instructional Program, range in grade from Pre-K through 12+, in all subject areas, from a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, and whose lives may also be impacted by cognitive, physical, and emotional disabilities. In real terms what this means is that on any given day, I provide instruction to students who have been diagnosed with either a catastrophic, chronic, or psychiatric illness which prevent the student from attending a regular school setting.

As a "Homebound" teacher I provide instruction either in the student's home or the hospital, which requires that my "classroom" be mobile, as I travel across the highways and byways of the county daily.

Since the grade levels of the students on my caseload vary greatly, it is critical that I can access a wide variety of resources to support their learning in school-based content, as well as exploring areas of personal interest so that I can help to foster a love of learning.

The medical conditions of homebound students may range from chronic illnesses such as Sickle-Cell Anemia and Asthma, to potentially catastrophic condition such as organ transplants and cancer, or psychiatric diagnoses such as schizophrenia.

My Project

My Hospital Homebound Instructional Program students need access to support their learning beyond textbooks, which are one-dimensional springboards for learning. Rather than simply reading about an idea, such as global warming, they will be able, via a laptop, to visit multi-dimensional websites to explore the most current data, information, and maps, or use multiple sites to interactively practice basic math or reading skills, and expand their technology skills through hands-on practice.

The use of a portable printer, and a laptop will enable my students, to explore ideas and to create a work product in an instant to reinforce concepts, edit, share, or even display.
